WELL, I NEVER

I'd come across Frederic Mullally's name as a Tribune journalist when Orwell was there — I'd seen a couple of pamphlets he'd written and he was quoted in a couple of pieces two or three years ago saying that he didn't think Orwell had quite given up on the anti-semitism of his class. But I hadn't worked out what happened to him after Tribune (apart from writing thrillers) until this weekend.

Ooh-er, missus — a little Googling reveals that he spent the 1970s writing the words for a satirical cartoon strip, "Oh, Wicked Wanda", drawn by Ron Embleton, in the porn magazine Penthouse, while living in Malta. There's a load more (not for the censorious) here. A marvellous respite from the everyday grind (sorry) of telling the tale of righteous upstanding (sorry) lefties...
